Writing an essay may sound like a humungous chore and it will undoubtedly take a considerable amount of willpower to craft a custom college essay. Many student put off working on this academic requirement, however, it can also be viewed as a chance to make a difference and stand out. College admission committees usually check grades and test scores as a requirement for admission, but there are also colleges that turn to other documents for consideration. To select worthy students, they also look at your letters of recommendation, extra-curricular activities, and your college essay to know more about you and what sets you apart from the rest of the applicants.
Write an Essay that Tells Your Story
You are truly unique with your own set of interest, background and personality. Your essay will be a great opportunity for you to tell your story and your uniqueness. Aim for a personalized and thoughtful essay about something that is meaningful for you. Write sincerely and honestly. Avoid trying to be someone that you are not just to impress the admission committee.
A college essay needs to showcase your motivation or your passion. You do not need to be a junior entrepreneur or a world traveller to write thoughtfully and passionately, write about something or someone that had an impact to your life.
Write from the Heart
Anybody can write about an experience, an important person, a book and anything that had an influence on his or her life. But expressing the feelings while you give a blow by blow of the events is so much better. Describe your thoughts and the things you’ve learned from the person or the experience and the way it has changed you.
A little bit of humor can go a long way especially if the admission officers had a long day of reading essays. But you must also be careful because what might be funny for a student may be offensive or uncalled for to an adult. Caution should be observed when inserting one-liners or punch lines to college essays.
Start Out Soon and Create Drafts
Start writing your college essay as soon as possible. Avoid trying to put it off until the last few days until the deadline. Use your time wisely. You may write several drafts and try to read it after a few days. Try to consider how the college admission officer may think about your work. Does it reveal something about you? Is it interesting and will it keep them reading until the end? Is it written in the student’s own voice?
Review your work many times and make sure that it will not contradict with the other parts of your application. College essay is not a place to discuss your grades, awards and test grades. Avoid putting on information that can be found in your application.
Find Someone to Proof-read and Edit Your Essay
Writing and re-writing an essay can bog down any college applicant. Checking it out several times may cleanse it of grammatical errors and improve its structure. You may also revise it to flow logically and clearly. Still, finding someone or at least one other person to edit and check your essay is a wise move. A fresh pair of eyes can better see and correct spelling, typographical and grammatical errors which you might have missed.
